Why OneCup? An intro to Taupo’s first cup cycling initiative
March 21, 2019
Last year some of New Zealand’s largest retailers waved ‘goodbye’ to single-use plastic bags. And while this was certainly good news for the environment, there is still a very long way to go.
For example – the humble coffee cup. We Kiwi’s love our hot drinks, especially ones of the takeaway variety. But there’s a darker side to this love affair with on-the-run coffee.
295 million single-use cups are dumped into New Zealand landfills per year. No doubt that is a staggering number and when you really think about it, there is actually no need for this kind of waste. A hot drink goes into a cup, the person spends around 15 minutes consuming it and then it’s gone.
Times this by nearly 300 million times annually (in just New Zealand alone), and that is an environmental disaster.
“But the disposable cups I get from my local cafe have it printed on them that they are recyclable and/or biodegradable.” While your intentions may be good, the fact is we actually have limited commercial facilities here in New Zealand to carry out the process of recycling or composting – and a minimal number of bins in our towns and cities to even collect them.
A cup cycling solution to combat the amount of waste generated by single-use cups. And it’s simple! You visit one of our (currently 11) OneCup Partner Cafés, pay a $2 deposit on top of the coffee purchase and you’re on your way.
After you’ve enjoyed your drink you have two choices: return the cup and redeem your deposit or hand it in and get your coffee in a fresh new OneCup. The best news – no big spend on your own reusable cup and no washing for you.
So what does this mean in the grand scheme of things? A single OneCup can be reused 1,000 times. This saves 1,000 disposable cups going to landfill (equal to 11kg of waste per OneCup), and at the end of its life, a OneCup will most definitely be recycled.
We’re so excited to have launched this initiative in the Taupō District and we would love for you to support us and the cafés who have partnered with OneCup. Please get in touch if you have any queries or suggestions, we’d love to hear from you.
